Tour to the historical Varjakansaari Island

From: 15,00

Description

Tour to the historical sawmill of the Varjakansaari Island and a trip to the history of the surrounding area.

The 1920s was an era of prosperity and business.  Steamboats and sailboats alike were loading boards, planks, props and pit mine props in the roadstead. At times as many as five vessels with shiny black sides and a two-mast yacht were waiting their turn in the port. The south-western bank was extended using waste timber, wooden beams and sawdust. Varjakka had its own cinema, bakery, shop, fire brigade and jail. There was hustle and bustle just as in a small town.

1928 The main driveshaft of the sawmill broke for the third time. 1929 timber exports declined as the New York Stock Exchange crashed. The sawmill owner was unwilling to carry out the costly repair of the main driveshaft and closed down the sawmill.

Access to island with a traditional manually-powered ferryboat made of wood.
